The comeback of sage is here. Unbeknownst to new sage users, burning sage, also known as smudging, is one of the oldest and purest methods of cleansing a space or a person. It is also used to get rid of unwanted spirits. Burning sage dates back to prehistoric times and it’s been documented as having been used in every part of the world by our ancestors.

Since it’s September is all about refocusing your energies, use this time to clear them with the use of sage.

The Magic Of Sage Smoke

Before you think of mystic and whatnot, there is a science behind the smoke of sage. Simply put, its smoke clears bacteria in the air, which then provides rapid delivery to the brain and efficient absorption to the body.

Based on scientific studies, sage can clear up to 94% of airborne bacteria in space and disinfect the air. This happens because then the sage is burned, it releases negative ions—which is the reason behind that uplifted mood you get after a smudge.

Sage Your Space & Get Rid Of Negative Energies

Smudging sage in space to clear negative energies isn’t time-consuming. Make sure to open a door or a window before you light it up. Additionally, it’s better to have an intention or a mantra ready.

Take a moment before you light the sage to determine exactly what it is that you want to clear or release from yourself or space. When you have this figured out, decide on a mantra that you can repeat while you smudge the space.

Now, it’s time to light it up! When it’s already lit, hold it at a 45-degree angle and let it burn for 20 seconds. Gently blow out the flame until you see orange embers on one end, and this is when you’ll notice the smoke. When smoke is present, slowly walk around the space and let the smoke waft around. You can guide it toward the open windows or doors so it can escape along with the negativity.

When smudging space, pay close attention to mirrors, corners, hallways, and doorways. You can also smudge phones and laptops.

Extinguish the sage safely by pressing the burning tip firmly into dirt or sand until smoke is no longer present. Make sure it doesn’t get wet because it will ruin the tip of the stick and make it harder to light next time.
